The Last One (I Promise You)

I hear the motor runnin' on the 18-wheeler
I watch the tears fall down your face
Both of us smilin', just tryin' to be strong
But knowin' soon, we'll have better days

It looks like another goodbye has come upon us
But, don't cry darlin', this will be the last one
I promise you

The smell of diesel always means goodbye
So do the fireflies hittin' the windshield
You left an extra blanket to keep me warm
And a note that says "I love you, Dad" taped to the steering wheel

It looks like another goodbye has snuck up on us
But, don't cry darlin', this will be the last one
I promise you

The flannel on the front seat smells of your perfume
It reminds me of what I can look forward to
It's a long trip to L.A. from Baton Rouge
But tell our little boy Daddy's comin' home soon

Me and the open road and Hank Williams on my CD player
This bottle of caffeine's gonna keep me awake
But I must go now, there's a lot of road to cover
I don't wanna deal with the traffic on the Interstate

It looks like another goodbye has come upon us
But, don't cry darlin', this will be the last one
I promise you
