Union Man

Me and Sue,
We’d moved out to the country
We were doing well
I was making real good money
Working that 9 to 5
Down at the auto plant
We had a first-rate health plan
When I was a union man

The men on top
They gave us better contracts
‘Cause the UA Local
They always watched our backs
Living with no worries
Assembling sports sedans
Somebody always took a stand
When I was a union man

To our children, we made a guarantee:
They’d get to go to college, unlike Sue or me
But to our surprise, that dream would be postponed
When they sent our jobs way down to Mexico

It’s been 2 years
Since the plant shut down
This once-thriving city
Is now a wretched ghost town
There’s less loyalty
To the U.S. brand
Fierce competition
Coming from Japan
But I’ll stand proud
And do the best I can
Just like a union man
I am a union man
